Solana Beach is an upscale and affluent city to the north of San Diego and is home to over 12,000 residents.
Solana Beach was known as Lockwood Mesa until 1923. The area blossomed thanks to the creation of a 12,000 acre irrigation district in 1918.
The city gained national attention in 2003 when it become the first city in the continental USA to enact a smoking ban on its public beaches, a trend which has since continued in many other coastal Californian towns and their beaches.
