San Diego, county seat of San Diego County, is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. Known as the birthplace of California, San Diego was the first site visited by Europeans in 1542 and was founded in 1769. The city is known for mild temperatures year-round and has a population exceeding 1.3 Million.

San Diego’s natural deep-water harbor is home to the U.S. Navy and derives much of its economic activities from military and defense-related activities as well as tourism, international trade and manufacturing.

San Diego is the location of the only major submarine and shipbuilding yards on the West Coast of the United States. The city hosts the largest naval fleet in the world with more than 53 ships, over 120 tenant commands and over 35,000 sailors, soldiers, Department of Defense civilian employees and contractors.

Tourism is another major industry in the city thanks to the agreeable climate, beautiful beaches and plentiful tourist attractions including the San Diego Zoo, Belmont Amusement park, Balboa Park and Seaworld San Diego. Furthermore, San Diego’s cruise ship industry is the second largest in California where each cruise ship call is estimated to inject over $2 million into the local economy.

San Diego’s location on the coast and proximity to the USA-Mexico border make it a prime candidate for international trade and factors greatly in the city’s economy.

Sports are an important part of San Diego’s identity and the city is home to two major professional sport franchises: The San Diego Chargers in the National Football League and the San Diego Chargers in Major League Baseball.
